The fee is the number everyone argues about; usage is the number that quietly decides whether you got a good deal. Buy too much and you pay for media you never run; buy too little and you are back at the table — and the price — within a year.

Right the four dials

Every usage grant turns on four dials: duration, media (digital, TV, print, outdoor), territory, and exclusivity. Widen only the dials your plan actually needs. A twelve-month all-media national lock is expensive; a six-month digital-plus-outdoor grant may be all you use.

Write down the boring parts

Renewal terms, approval timelines, and what happens to live creative when the window ends belong in the contract, not in a follow-up email. The disputes that cost brands money are almost always about the clause nobody wrote.

Negotiate the package, not the day

Bundling the shoot, stills and social into one negotiation — with clear usage on each — almost always beats paying piecemeal later.
